Chapter Titles

I'm currently outlining a "short" story that I'm working on mostly for fun, but also to develop my writing. One thing that I'm experimenting with is interesting chapter titles. Each title describes a character in that chapter.

  1. the Shade

  2. the Engineer

  3. the Assassin

  4. the Guest

  5. the Dame

Through the eyes of a betta fish

You see me at the petstore. I cannot make out your face; to me, it is simply a moving mass of pink that stares at me with eyes larger than my body. You are terrifying.

I swim in my own filth, detritus clouding the water around me and laboring my breathing. My gills flare, trying to soak in every bit of oxygen my tiny plastic prison holds. So many days I have been lying here, each day sapping my strength just a little bit more. My colors fade away. My fins, once so long and beautiful, become ragged things with rotting black edges. Is this my life now? Will I wither away and die in this tiny cup?

AsI lay there, you pick up my cup, jostling me though you try to be gentle.

And then I am moving.

Carried away from my shelf and into sunlight.

I am carried…

Fawkes

I have way too many book recs, but the first one that comes to mind is Fawkes by Nadine Brandes. And what's funny is I'm not as big a fan of her other books, but this one left me reeling at how good it was.

It's a historical fantasy (with a little bit of romance) set during the Gunpowder Plot. The main character is the son of Guy Fawkes, and he's caught in the middle of this conflict between Keepers (this world's version of Catholics, basically) and Igniters (Protestants, I guess). He's also suffering from a plague that's turned his eye to stone, and on top of all that, there's someone in his head trying to tell him things that his father says are false.

This is a really really bad description, but I promise, check out the book. It is so good. It's one of the few pieces of…

Caraval

I just read the Caraval series by Stephanie Garber, and quite enjoyed it. It's about a magical carnival--run by this utterly mysterious fellow named Legend--that two sisters get caught up in, but it's far more dangerous than a normal carnival. Would highly reccomend. 8/10

I don't really hate coffee, but I have no desire to drink it (and I hate it when I'm drinking it, so yeah, I guess I hate coffee.)

How much would someone bleed if you stabbed them in the chest with a three-pronged pitchfork and it went staight out their back?

Chapters 1-4

My writing ability grew a lot while writing while writing this story . . . which naturally means that I'm a lot happier with the second half than the first half. This is probably the section that needs the most work. Nevertheless, I hope you enjoy it and are interested in more.
